Financial institutions statistics

This section includes statistics compiled by the Banco de España on the activity of financial corporations. This grouping includes institutional units that are independent legal entities and market producers, and whose principal activity is the production of financial services. These institutional units engage in financial intermediation and/or auxiliary financial activities.

These statistics are presented by type of activity.

The first block details the activity of monetary financial institutions: the Banco de España, credit institutions, specialised lending institutions, electronic money institutions and money market funds.

The second block contains information on non-bank financial corporations, broadly equivalent to the international concept of "shadow banking".

The third block includes information relating to non-monetary financial institutions, except insurance corporations and pension funds, which comprise: non-MMF investment funds, other financial intermediaries, financial auxiliaries and captive financial institutions and money lenders.

The fourth block corresponds to insurance corporations and pension funds. Both groups include entities engaging in financial intermediation resulting from the pooling of risks.
