Extraordinary revision of the detail by economic activity sector of foreign direct investment

On 14th April, an extraordinary revision will be carried out on the details of foreign direct investment by economic activity (contained in tables 17.42 and 17.43) for an extended period, starting from 2013. This revision will coincide with the regular publication of additional annual details of the Balance of Payments/International Investment Position (BP/IIP) that will be disseminated for 2024 on this occasion, following today's publication of the quarterly data.

The revision of previous data will generally be limited to the initial stock of the BP/IIP, corresponding to 2023. However, in the case of details by economic activity of foreign direct investment, an improvement will be implemented that requires revising the historical series. This improvement refines the method of assigning the activity of resident holding companies by applying the reclassification explained in Statistical Note 20, 2024 benchmark revision of the balance of payments and international investment position of the Spanish Economy, to a broader set of holding companies. The reclassification implies considering the activity of the group in Spain. As a result, there will be a shift from the aggregate of financial and insurance activities (which includes the CNAE of activities of holding companies) towards other productive activities, without affecting the total data.
