Observatory of the Non-Banking Fintech Industry in Spain

This section presents visualizations of the data collected in the Observatory of the Non-Banking Fintech1 Industry, an experimental statistic developed by Banco de España that includes data gathered since 2018.

To systematically organize the collection of these data, and given that the theoretical definition of the fintech phenomenon remains difficult to implement in practice, Banco de España has developed its own methodology. This methodology allows, on the one hand, the identification of the entities that should be included in the population, and on the other, the calculation of the main economic and financial variables of these entities. You can consult this methodology at the following linkArchivo PDF: Abre en nueva ventana. To facilitate the dissemination of this product, Banco de España has published a statistical noteArchivo PDF: Abre en nueva ventana, available here, which, in addition to the methodology, includes an economic analysis of these institutions for the period 2018–2023.

The following dashboard presents the information available in this experimental statistic, summarized in three sections ('Census and Characteristics', 'Distribution and Segmentation', and 'Aggregated Quantitative Information'). Users can interact with the visualizations, so that any filters applied to one chart are automatically reflected across the other charts within the same thematic area. Additionally, anonymized microdata used to generate the visualizations are available for download. Researchers interested in accessing the granular database from which this statistic is derived may do so through Banco de España’s Data Laboratory (BELab)Abre en nueva ventana.

1The Financial Stability Board (FSB)Abre en nueva ventana defines Fintech as “technology-enabled innovation in financial services that could result in new business models, applications, processes, or products with an associated material effect on the provision of financial services".
