If you suspect that a banknote or coin is counterfeit, we recommend that you follow these guidelines:
- Do not accept a suspicious banknote or coin and explain that you are not sure it is genuine.
- Kindly request another notes or coin without questioning their good faith. Better not take risks.
- Immediately inform the police authorities or security personnel. Take note of as much information as possible.
- If you suspect that you have accepted a counterfeit banknote or coin, you should not give it to another person, as it would be considered an illegal action.
- Deliver the suspicious banknote or coin to the police authorities, a credit institution or any branch of the Banco de España. Don't worry, if it is genuine, you will recover its value. On the contrary, if the banknote is fake, it is not redeemable.
