Summary

Neurodesign and emotional design are applied in the development of products that connect with consumers’ vision and lifestyle. These techniques are also used for banknotes, as more secure and reliable designs are needed, which the public can identify with and be proud to use. The aim of this paper is to outline the key concepts and fundamentals of neuroscience, perception and design. It also provides an overview of neuroscience and its analytical techniques as applied to the banknote lifecycle: the design of banknotes and security features, the detection of illegal reproductions, and the assessment of manufacturing defects for quality management. Neurometric analysis techniques are an effective tool for quantifying the impact of sensory stimulation on banknote perception, and for assessing different cognitive processes such as visual interest, memory, emotions and sustained attention on the different areas of interest on the banknote, as described in the different perception studies analysed in this document. This information, together with the analysis of the different perceptual models of users, including visually impaired people, enables the development of banknote designs capable of responding to users’ needs and facilitating the identification of the security features included. The introduction of new trends, such as tactility, the study of voice, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, contributes to the continuous adaptation and evolution of neuroscience and its tools. This combination of neurodesign, virtual reality and artificial intelligence technologies has given rise to the Neurocash project, developed in collaboration between the Banco de España and Immersive Neurotechnologies Lab (LENI) of the Bioengineering Research & Innovation Institute (I3B) - Universitat Politècnica of València. The aim of the project is to develop cash that meets the demand of the public and other stakeholders in society for an attractive, easy-to-identify and secure payment method.
