Captive financial institutions and money lenders

Definition

Subsector of the economy comprised of all financial institutions and quasi-corporations that are neither engaged in financial intermediation nor provide auxiliary financial services, and when the majority of their assets or liabilities are not traded in open markets.

It includes holding companies that own shares in financial and non-financial corporations held by non-residents and residents (if they have decision-making autonomy), conduits that issue securities on behalf of a related resident company classified as a financial institutions or a non-resident entity, as well as other captive financial companies.

They correspond to sector S.127 of the economic sector classification, according to the European System of Accounts 2010, and are part of the aggregate of other non-monetary financial institutions (subsectors S.125, S.126, and S.127), within the financial institutions sector (sector S.12).
