A company whose activity consists of receiving deposits or other repayable funds from the public and granting credits on its own account.

Credit institutions are comprised of:
- deposit-taking institutions
- the Official Credit Institute (ICO)
- systemically important investment service companies (ESIS), with the observation date starting from September 2022.
Unlike the group of credit institutions, the "credit system" grouping includes the Banco de España.
