Credit institutions

Definition

A company whose activity consists of receiving deposits or other repayable funds from the public and granting credits on its own account.

Credit institutions are comprised of:

  • deposit-taking institutions
  • the Official Credit Institute (ICO)
  • systemically important investment service companies (ESIS), with the observation date starting from September 2022.

Unlike the group of credit institutions, the "credit system" grouping includes the Banco de España.
