Definition
A broad measure of the financing provided by the Monetary Financial Institutions (MFI) sector to residents in the euro area who are not MFIs (including the private sector and General Government).
Further information
This definition includes loans and holdings of securities. Among these are shares, equity, and debt securities issued by residents in the euro area who are not MFIs. Since securities can be considered an alternative source of financing compared to loans and since some loans can be securitized, this definition provides more accurate information on the total volume of financing provided by the MFI sector to the economy than a more limited definition that only includes loans.
