Definition

They are economic flows that involve the net acquisition of financial assets or the net incurrence of liabilities. These types of operations can be the counterpart of non-financial operations, or they can involve only financial instruments. The terms operations and transactions are equivalent.

The terms financial operations or financial transactions are used in Balance of Payments statistics and Financial Accounts to designate actions within a given period. To designate the level of assets or liabilities at a specific point in time, the term position is used. These positions are presented in the Financial Accounts and the International Investment Position.

When referring to net financial transactions, it means the difference between the net acquisition of assets and the net liabilities incurred by an institutional sector for a given period
