Banco de España

Definition

The Banco de España is a public law entity that performs the function of the national central bank in Spain. It is also assigned the supervision of the Spanish banking system and other financial intermediaries operating in Spain.

These functions are carried out within the European institutional framework, of which the Bank of Spain is a part as a member of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the Eurosystem, as well as the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM).

The mission of the Bank of Spain is to achieve price stability and financial stability, thereby promoting stable economic growth. Additionally, it contributes with its analysis to the formulation of other economic policies.

The Banco de España corresponds to sector S.121 of the economic sectorisation, according to the European System of Accounts 2010, and is part of the financial institutions sector (S.12).
