Abstract
Public Debt according to the Excessive Deficit Protocol is the key statistic used to assess the sustainability of public finances. This note analyses Spanish general government debt in 2025 based on the statistics prepared and published by the Banco de España and drawing comparisons with other euro area countries. In 2025 Spain’s public debt-to-GDP ratio fell by 1 percentage point to 100.7% and it remained above the euro area average (87.4% of GDP), but the gap between the two narrowed further.
