To make it easier for those affected by the recent flash floods in Valencia to exchange damaged cash, the Banco de España has decided to implement certain extraordinary measures:

  • Information for individuals and retailers in the areas affected:

A dedicated counter for exchanging damaged cash has been opened at the Valencia branch officeOpens in new window for those affected by the floods.

The counter will be open to the public from 8:30 am to 2 pm, Monday to Friday, with no prior appointment required.

If the banknotes and coins can be counted and recognised as genuine, they will be exchanged immediately. If a more detailed examination is required, they will be exchanged as soon as possible, once they have been counted and their authenticity established. In this case contact data must be provided using this formOpens in new window (in Spanish).

Exceptionally, an agreement has been signed with banks in the area to allow damaged cash to be exchanged at their branches and mobile outlets by both customers and non-customers alike.

People wishing to exchange damaged cash should do so either at the Banco de España or at a bank, and not accept such services offered by third persons at their home, as these could be fraudulent.
