Informing and being accountable to society

Transparency is a key principle that guides all the activities of the Banco de España. The Bank’s commitment to this principle is inherent to its institutional culture. Transparency also helps transform the Bank to strengthen its ties with the society it serves.

The Banco de España is subject to the Transparency Law in relation to the activities it performs that are subject to administrative law. In accordance with this Law, the Bank approaches the transparency regime from two angles:

Some accountability mechanisms that allow society to learn about the Bank and examine its activity are the Transparency Portal, public appearances and statements by the institution’s senior officers and the publication of reports.

One notable report published by the Banco de España is the Institutional Report.

Since 2016 this publication has offered an overview of the Bank’s organisation, its structure and the different functions it performs, as well as a summary of the main activities carried out during the year and information on its economic and financial position. The Institutional Report is designed to be accessible and present, in a user-friendly format, the work carried out by the Bank for the benefit of society.
