The goods heading in the Balance of Payments (BoP) records the value of goods whose economic ownership is transferred between a resident and a non-resident, regardless of whether the goods cross the border of the country compiling the statistics. This definition, and the published results, are fully consistent with the exports and imports of goods disseminated within the framework of National Accounts.
Until now, BoP data was only provided in aggregate form. However, in recent years, issues such as supply chain disruptions in global value chains, energy price developments, and the resurgence of protectionist tensions, among others, have significantly increased the demand for product-level information within the goods item of the BoP.
To address this information gap, since November 2025 the Bank of Spain has been publishing a quarterly breakdown of the goods item in the BoP by product groupings in Table 17.4f
The estimation methodology can be consulted in the statistical note: "Relación entre las estadísticas de comercio exterior de bienes y las de bienes de la Balanza de Pagos".
Below you can find various charts showing data on exports, imports, and the balance of the goods item (in levels, percentages of the total, and year-on-year growth rates) for the considered CUCI product groupings. In these visualizations, users can filter by type of movement and/or period.
