Carbon intensity

Definition

GHG emissions per unit of economic output. It is expressed as the amount of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emitted per unit of economic output, for example, tons of CO2e per million euros of revenue.

Further information

This indicator allows for the evaluation of the environmental efficiency of a company or sector in terms of its emissions relative to its economic performance.

Carbon intensity is fundamental for establishing decarbonization strategies. By identifying areas with higher carbon intensity, companies and governments can focus their efforts on reducing emissions at these critical points.

It is calculated by dividing the total GHG emissions (in tons of CO2 equivalent) by a measure of economic production, such as revenue, added value or average number of employees.
