Abstract

The Banco de España’s adjusted balance sheets are its accounting balance sheets rearranged. Their purpose is to facilitate the analysis of certain monetary magnitudes. These balance sheets have been a very useful tool for monitoring the Spanish monetary situation since the late 1950s. This Note compiles the explanatory notes published with these balance sheets, in a structured manner and in chronological order. In short, it presents an overview of how the monitoring of monetary policy has evolved in Spain. These explanatory notes, together with the adjusted balance sheet dataset compiled as part of the Historical Statistics for Researchers project, entail the culmination of work begun by a number of historians in the late 1960s, including data from as far back as 1852.
