Abstract
Rationale
The expansion of artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented investment in advanced technologies and infrastructure. This paper examines how this expansion is financed and highlights the growing role of private markets in mobilising capital, alongside the emergence of strong interdependencies among firms, investors and infrastructure providers. The sector’s leading participants are becoming increasingly interconnected through complex financial and commercial relationships, highlighting the need to analyse leverage, as well as investment and funding structures, with a view to facilitating the assessment of vulnerabilities and supporting efficient capital allocation.
Takeaways
- Leading AI-related companies have increased their co-investments with non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs), particularly through venture capital. NBFI involvement in joint ventures has also been substantial, driven by the expansion of data centre infrastructure, as operators increasingly rely on partnerships to finance projects and share risks.
- The sector's interconnectedness may amplify vulnerabilities, particularly amid rising leverage and the growing complexity of AI-related investment and financing structures.
- Circular investment and financing arrangements, cross-shareholdings and special purpose vehicles (SPVs) may reduce transparency regarding ultimate funding sources and risk concentrations.
