Bulgaria adopts the euro
The Banco de España will exchange lev banknotes until 2 March
Bulgaria has joined the euro area on 1 January 2026. The euro will gradually replace the lev as official currency.

- To celebrate Bulgaria joining the euro area the ECB will illuminate its main building for the first eleven days of the new year from 17:30 (CET) marking Bulgaria's adoption of the euro
