Bulgaria will join the euro area on 1 January 2026, adopting the euro as its official currency. From 1 January to 2 March 2026, the Banco de España will exchange Bulgarian lev banknotes (BGN) for euro banknotes and coins.
The irrevocable conversion rate has been set at BGN 1.95583 per euro. You can exchange banknotes free of charge, with a daily limit of BGN 2,000 per person, at the following Banco de España offices only:
- Madrid (Calle Alcalá, 48),
- Barcelona (Plaza Cataluña,17) and
- Valencia (Calle Barcas, 6).
