Banco de España begins the dissemination of the Financial Soundness Indicators (FSIs) corresponding to the Spanish economy, following the standard established by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
FSIs are a set of over forty indicators that provide an assessment of the financial health of a country's financial institutions, as well as their counterparts, including non-financial corporations, households, and public administrations.
The compilation of these indicators started in the early 21st century and was revised and expanded by the IMF in the 2019 Financial Soundness Indicators: Compilation Guide. The dissemination of these indicators, for all collaborating countries, began in 2022. Banco de España now joins this effort, focusing on the information block related to the Spanish economy.
These indicators are presented in four new tables which complement the information already available on the IMF website. These tables are:
The first table groups all the FSIs related to the Spanish economy and can be consulted in the Summary indicators publication, accessible from the «Statistics by Publications» section. The second and third tables can be found both in the topic areas of Financial corporations
and Financial and prudential information from credit institutions
, while the fourth table is only located in the Financial corporations topic area.
In addition to the above, the Synthesis of real estate market indicators table (SI.1.5) within the «Synthesis of Indicators» section has been modified to include details of loans for housing and commercial properties, both calculated based on the total gross loans granted by credit institutions. This table can also be consulted in the topic area of General economic statistics
.
As a complement to this new publication, the following are also being disseminated:
- The Methodological note of the Financial Soundness Indicators (FSIs)
, with the aim of facilitating users' understanding of the FSI indicators.
- The update dates for these indicators, included in the Release calendar for statistics
.
This new dissemination entails the discontinuation of the tables related to debt Ratio (table 15.31) and Return on equity (table 15.32), in the Non-financial corporations topic area. These indicators, which were previously calculated using information from companies' financial statements, will now be compiled using data from the National Accounts and will henceforth be included in the general FSIs publication. The data that are no longer published can be consulted in this dataset
of Historical statistics for researchers
from Banco de España.
