Definition
The official interest rates of the European Central Bank are the interest rates set and used by that institution within the operational framework established to maintain price stability in the euro area.
Further information
These interest rates are a fundamental instrument in the conduct of monetary policy, as they impact the financing costs of economic agents (public administrations, companies, households). This impact occurs in capital markets, bank loans, as well as in the remuneration of various savings instruments (e.g., bank deposits).
As a result, the monetary policy decisions of the European Central Bank affect the consumption, savings, and investment decisions of households and businesses. Therefore, by modifying interest rates, the ECB influences aggregate economic activity and, ultimately, inflation.
Among these official rates are the main refinancing operations rate, the deposit facility rate, and the marginal lending facility rate.
