The Historical Archive

The Banco de España Historical Archive contains the documents produced by the Banco Nacional de San Carlos (1782-1829), the Banco Español de San Fernando (1829-1856) and the Banco de España (1856 to the present) in the course of their work. It also includes the documentary output of the Banco de Isabel II (established in Madrid in 1844 and merged with the Banco de San Fernando in 1847) and other institutions whose functions have been assumed by the Banco de España over time.

The Archive stands as a vital witness to Spain’s economic, social and political trajectory over the past 242 years, as well as to the Bank’s internal history. As one of the world's leading banking and financial archives, it captures the institution’s own life story and that of the organisations, banks and individuals that have interacted with it. It offers a reflection of the events, people and mindsets that have shaped Spain's recent history. The Historical Archive has been open to the public since 1982.
