Abstract
The recent inclusion of Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia as candidate countries has given new impetus to the European Union’s enlargement process. This possible future enlargement has important implications from a geopolitical and economic point of view, with expected gains in terms of trade, investment opportunities and supply of critical products, but it also poses important challenges for the functioning of the European Union itself, which will probably require major reforms in areas such as the decision-making process and the budget.
