Given the role that banks play in the economy, it is essential to make sure that the financial system works well and is efficient and stable. For this reason, banks are supervised and regulated to make sure that the financial system can be relied upon.
Since 4 November 2014, the Single Supervisory Mechanism, a system led by the European Central Bank and comprising national supervisory authorities (such as the Banco de España), has been responsible for supervising Spanish and other euro area significant credit institutions.
