The Reproduction Research Centre (RRC) is an international initiative created in 1989 to strengthen cooperation among central banks and to advance research on the resilience of banknotes against modern counterfeiting techniques. Its work contributes to enhancing the security of future banknote series and optimising related costs.
The RRC mission is focused on evaluating the robustness of current and future security features against emerging technical threats, thereby supporting central banks in selecting secure, effective, and forward‑looking features for future banknote series. In practice, the RRC enables central banks´ experts to identify vulnerabilities and enhance counterfeit resilience.
Starting in 2026, the Banco de España hosts the RRC at IMBISA’s high-security facilities, equipped with specialized laboratories and state-of-the-art technology dedicated to banknote security research. As host institution, the Banco de España manages the Centre’s operations and provides the necessary technical, administrative, and operational support.
