With a view to fostering knowledge and sharing the Banco de España’s documentary and numismatic heritage, the Historical Archive produces a range of publications and specialised research.

Alongside its published series, the Archive also provides researchers and other interested parties with monographs and catalogues linked to its collections.

The structure and composition of the Banco de España’s Governing Council have evolved over the course of more than two centuries, reflecting the regulatory and institutional landscape of each era. Its various names and organisational structures have been shaped by the different legal instruments in force throughout history, including royal warrants, laws, charters and regulations.

This publication explores how the Governing Council has evolved across different historical periods, examining its predecessors and functions, as well as the context in which each era unfolded and the prevailing rules and regulations. The study also examines the eligibility criteria for those serving on the Governing Council and a detailed list of its members, providing a systematic and documented account of the Council’s composition between 1782 and 2015.

This index compiles valuable documentary records that shed light on how the initial capital of Spain’s first national bank was formed, along with the extensive information contained in its foundational share certificates.

It is a useful reference for economic, sociological, institutional, geographical and genealogical research, providing a comprehensive overview of the key information sources available both in the Banco de España Historical Archive and other major repositories, including the National Historical Archive.

This publication traces the evolution of the banknotes issued by the Banco de España and its predecessors, providing a systematic and thorough description of their key features.

In line with the work below, the economic and political events surrounding the issuances, as well as any counterfeiting incidents, are deliberately omitted to focus on the documentary and visual aspects.

Drawing on the Banco de España’s collection, the book showcases the artistic and cultural value of these pieces, which are often of remarkable aesthetic quality.

The book presents a detailed overview of the banknotes issued by the Banco de España and its predecessors, the Banco Nacional de San Carlos and the Banco Español de San Fernando.

Arranged with the precision of a catalogue, it focuses on the key features of each issuance. The book draws essentially on the Banco de España collection, which covers virtually all Spanish banknotes, including some in facsimile.

It is primarily a visual work, with notes explaining features and details not directly visible in the images. These banknotes, with their technical and artistic complexity, are a valuable record of the visual and material representation of money over time.
