The Banco de España’s Historical Archive provides researchers and specialists access to an extensive documentary collection, one that is indispensable for understanding Spain’s economic, social and institutional history over the last two centuries.
To ensure this heritage is used appropriately, access to the records and the reading room is subject to clear rules and procedure.
The Historical Archive records
To consult the Historical Archive you must first request an appointment using the contact form

The request must clearly indicate:
- the nature and purpose of the research
- the date range for the records you wish to consult
To access the reading room you must show your Spanish ID card or, if you are a foreign national, your passport.
Researchers may consult any documentation more than 40 years old. However, due to their nature or other restrictions, access to certain materials may require:
- additional supporting documentation
- specific rationale for the research
- prior authorisation
The Archive staff will indicate the specific requirements in each case.

Reading room
The Banco de España Historical Archive is the custodian of the institution’s documentary heritage and is entrusted with protecting and conserving it, as well as ensuring appropriate access to the records in its care.
