Digest
What is a central bank? What does the Banco de España do? How do its functions affect our daily lives? We couldn’t launch a Banco de España podcast without properly introducing ourselves.
José Luis Escrivá, the Governor of the Banco de España, first walked through these doors 40 years ago. He joins us to discuss the Banco de España’s functions and their impact on the economy. We chat with him about how monetary policy is decided, how banks are supervised, our role in the smooth functioning of the payment system and the importance of our economists’ research. The aim in each case is to accomplish our mission as a central bank: contributing to sustainable growth and social well-being through price stability and a sound financial system.
We tap into José Luis Escrivá’s extensive professional experience to reflect on the similarities and differences between the Banco de España and other national and international institutions as well as the transformation that the Bank has undergone in recent decades.
Undoubtedly, the biggest change has been adopting the euro and joining the Eurosystem. This has made the Bank independent from the Government, which means it needs to be much more transparent, and fully accountable to society.
