Do you want your students to gain a detailed understanding of the Banco de España’s functions and how our work affects their daily lives?
The “Conoce el Banco de España” (“Get to know the Banco de España”) workshops – which are designed for students (whether secondary, upper secondary or in intermediate vocational training) – provide an overview of the Bank’s history and functions from its inception to its transformation into the modern and independent central bank of today.
Format
The “Conoce el Banco de España” workshops aim to share the history and some of the main functions of the Banco de España, with particular emphasis on its role in monetary policy.
These workshops are offered in two formats:
- In-person: alongside the presentation of theoretical concepts, the workshops include game-based activities (1).
- Videoconference: a condensed version is offered, focusing on the key functions of the Banco de España.
Additionally, all attendees will have access to supplementary resources that allow them to explore topics of interest in greater depth.
Content
The workshops address a range of topics(1), including:
- A brief historical overview, tracing the Bank’s origins from its precursor, the Banco Nacional de San Carlos, to the present-day Banco de España.
- The process of European integration and the role of the Banco de España as a member of the Eurosystem and the Single Supervisory Mechanism.
- The Banco de España’s main functions, paying particular attention to:
- The definition and implementation of monetary policy and its key role in maintaining price stability.
- The supervision of banks’ and financial market’s solvency and regulatory compliance with the aim of ensuring financial stability.
- Supporting the smooth operation of payment systems within the euro area.
- The issuance and circulation of banknotes and coins, along with measures to protect against counterfeiting.

Practical information
- The workshops are free and require booking in advance. The calendar for sessions during the school year opens for bookings from September.
- This activity is not recommended for children under 14.
- Workshops are conducted either in person on Banco de España premises or via videoconference.
- The number of participants may vary depending on the venue.
- The duration can range from one to three hours, again depending on the location(1).
- To ensure a smooth and orderly visit, please remember the following:
- All visitors must show their Spanish national ID card (DNI), foreigner ID card (NIE) or passport and enter the building through the security checkpoints.
- Access badges issued by the Banco de España security staff must be worn and visible at all times
- Groups must be accompanied by Banco de España staff at all times. Do not stray from the group.
- Do not take photos or videos inside the building.
- In the event of an evacuation, follow the instructions of the Banco de España security staff.
