Directorate General Banking Supervision

The Directorate General Banking Supervision is responsible for the following:

  • Providing an up-to-date and verified opinion on the risk profile, current financial situation and future continuity of credit institutions and their consolidated or financial groups, including aspects such as solvency, profitability and liquidity; the nature, level and management of their risks; organisation, internal control, policies applied and the capacity and effectiveness of their directors.
  • Supervising compliance with obligatory provisions, the control of which is the responsibility of the Banco de España.
  • Analysing the available data and carrying out inspection visits or using other suitable means to issue the corresponding reports and proposals.
  • Preparing the recommendations and requirements which must guide institutions and, where appropriate, proposing that disciplinary and sanction proceedings be launched, in view of the situations revealed, in accordance with the tasks described in the points above.
  • Participating in the enforcement of intervention measures or replacement of the directors of credit institutions in difficulties and maintaining relations with the Deposit Guarantee Fund.
  • Co-operating with other national or international supervisory authorities, organisations and general government in the area of prudential supervision.
  • Participating in designing the supervisory policy of the Banco de España, both in Spain and at an international level.
  • Collaborating with the Directorate General Banking Regulation in the proposals and drawing up of the financial regulations applicable to the supervised institutions.
  • Co-ordinating the Banco de España's international activity in matters of prudential supervision with the collaboration of the Directorate General Banking Regulation.
