Academic qualifications, distinctions and awards

1974 Degree with distinction in Economics from the School of Economics and Management Studies of the Madrid Complutense University, being further honoured with the special graduation award.
1981 Ph.D. in Economics from the Madrid Complutense University, with a cum laude distinction and special award.

Career details

1974-1980 Lecturer at the University of Comillas, imparting courses on macroeconomics and economic policy.
1974-1980 Assistant lectureship at the Complutense University in the Spanish Economy Department.
1980-1984 Member of the General Council of the Spanish Professional Association of Economists.
1981-1986 Associate lecturer at the Complutense University, imparting courses on labour economics and the Spanish economy, along with several subjects for doctorate students. He supervised several doctoral theses during this period.
1982-1986 Economist in the Research Department of the Banco de España.
1983-1986 Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal “Investigaciones Económicas”.
1986-1987 Deputy-Head of the Monetary and Financial Studies Office of the Banco de España.
1987-1992 Head of the Monetary and Financial Studies Office of the Banco de España.
1987 Member of the group of experts appointed by the Spanish government to study the problems of unemployment in the Spanish economy.
1992 to date Director-General of the Banco de España, with responsibility for Economics, Statistics and Research.
