Directorate General Operations, Markets and Payment Systems

The Directorate General Operations, Markets and Payment Systems has the following functions:

• Implementing monetary and exchange rate policies of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB).
• Managing its own foreign reserves and those of the European Central Bank (ECB).
• Providing government debt financial services while acting as the governing body of the government debt book entry market.
• Providing payment services and other banking operations in euros and foreign currency in the Banco de España's role as the bank of banks and banker of the State.
• Promoting and controlling the smooth operation of the interbank payment clearing systems, the supervision of retail payment systems and the management of the large-value payment systems organised by the Banco de España as a member of the ESCB.
• Managing the issue and circulation of banknotes and coins and all related operations.

The current Director General of the Directorate General Operations, Markets and Payment Systems is Javier Alonso.
