As the economic and social developments of recent decades have made increasingly clear, economic welfare and well-being cannot be gauged by GDP alone. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to Professors Acemoglu, Johnson and Robinson for their work on how the strength of institutions shapes the relative prosperity of nations. Their message is especially relevant today as institutional quality is declining worldwide.

Is reducing carbon emissions compatible with economic growth?
Squaring lower carbon emissions with growth requires energy efficiency to be improved and energy to be “decarbonised”. Headway on these fronts since the early 21st century has helped reduce emissions in Spain and Europe, but we must go much further if we are to achieve our climate targets.
