Summary

Banco de España has published this book, coordinated by the Archives and Document Management Division, presenting the archives of ten banking institutions and foundations conserving a total of 180 archives of organisations, most of which no longer exist. The archives of Banco de España, Banco de Santander, BBVA, Banco de Sabadell, the CECA, Fundación Bancaria “la Caixa”, Fundación Bancaja, Fundación Caja Inmaculada (CAI), Fundación Especial Pinnae (Caixa Penedés) and the Fundación Fundos Documentation Centre all took part in this work.

The book, with a prologue by Pablo Hernández de Cos, Governor of Banco de España, includes a study of changes in the Spanish banking system over the 20th century by historian Pedro Tedde de Lorca, and a map of banks and savings banks by Professor Carmen Angulo showing all the current banking institutions in Spain since their creation, including bank mergers.

This publication is of unique importance as it combines guides to Spain’s main banking archives in a single work, which will facilitate searches for information and will encourage research on economic and banking history based on analysis of the documents in the archives. It is hoped that other banking archives not yet identified will be added to the Guide in the future.

This publication is only available in Spanish.
