Mutilated and defective coins

In a similar way to what in the case of banknotes is established, mutilated or defective coins must be recognized by experts. The National Analysis Centre for Coins (CNAM) is placed in the Banco de España, who, in this case, acts on behalf of the Public Treasury, who issues the coins. Technical support is foreseen to be asked for by Banco de España from RCM-FNMT, minter of the euro coins.

If you have a mutilated or defective coin, you can take it to a credit institution (for example, your bank) to check whether it is genuine or not. You can also present it directly at a branch of the Banco de España, or send it to the CNAM to the following address:
