Changing pesetas to euros

It is possible to exchange pesetas for euros both in the Banco de España building in Madrid ( C/ Alcalá 48) and in its branch offices.

It is open to the public from Monday to Friday, from 08.30 to 14.00.

The Banco de España may ask the interested party to identify him/herself by showing his/her DNI , passport or residence card, and provided that the amount he/she wishes to exchange exceeds 3,000 euro.

The period for changing notes and coins in pesetas into euro in the Banco de España is until 31.12.2020.

Banknotes and coins in pesetas admitted for exchange

As a general rule, all peseta notes issued since 1939 may be chang ed. Those issued between 1936 and 1939 must be examined by experts from the Banco de España to determine their exchange value.

It is possible to exchange all the 2,000 peseta coins and those indicated below (the designs on the back and front may vary):

Portrait and dimensions of the coin

Peseta coins that have been altered through an industrial or mechanical process will not be exchanged.
