Changing peseta banknotes abroad

Foreign residents who cannot go directly to the Banco de España have the option of changing peseta notes into euro by sending them by registered post accompanied by the corresponding form duly filled out.

As a general rule, all peseta notes issued since 1939 may be changed. Those issued between 1936 and 1939 must be examined by experts from the Banco de España to determine their exchange value.

Coins can not be exchanged.

The Banco de España will make a transfer for the equivalent amount in euro to the bank account indicated on the from which should accompany the bank notes.

Some commercial banks offer their customers an exchange service, but this is neither free of charge nor compulsory.

The period for changing notes and coins in pesetas into euro in the Banco de España is until 31.12.2020.
