General information

  • What operations can be carried out by members of the public at Banco de España branch offices

The most frequent operations that members of the public carry out at Banco de España branch offices are the opening of direct accounts for the purchase and sale of government debt, and the exchange of pesetas for euros.

Direct accounts are custodial accounts for government debt (individuals may not hold cash accounts with the Banco de España). These accounts can be held by natural or legal persons resident in Spain.

Members of the public can also visit the Banco de España to exchange pesetas for euros, or to exchange defective or damaged banknotes, in accordance with the guidelines established by the European Central Bank.

It is also possible to visit Banco de España branch offices to request information from the Central Credit Register or to file documents with the Claims Service.
