Government debt

• Can a member of the public buy government debt through the Banco de España? What about opening a current account?

  Yes. It is possible to buy government debt through the Banco de España by opening a direct account. The Banco de España offers direct accounts as a service to natural and legal persons resident in Spain, in order to purchase and sell government debt.

  These are government debt security accounts, recorded as book entries, and in no circumstances do they represent the opening of a cash account (current account)  with the Banco de España.

  There are two procedures for opening a direct account:

  • By acquiring government debt directly from the Banco de España.
  • By transferring the balance of the accounts where the government debt is held from your financial institution (bank, savings bank, etc.) to the Banco de España.

  Members of the public cannot open current accounts with the Banco de España.
